Supporting SHRM and ASA to Help Talent “Get Back to Work”
February 11, 2019 | News Blog
In January 2019, the American Staffing Association (ASA) joined with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) to promote a new initiative, “Getting Talent Back to Work,” that helps talent with a criminal background find new employment opportunities.
The initiative is important for the U.S. labor market because of this statistic: more than 650,000 people re-enter society from prison each year. Yet, many of these individuals do not receive a second chance at employment opportunities.
We understand that many employers are concerned about hiring felons or other talent with a criminal record. That’s why it was important for the employment community to establish a uniform program that creates clarity in the process of recruiting, evaluating, and hiring these workers.
Implications for Employers Seeking Qualified Workers
One of the important aspects of the “Getting Talent Back to Work” program is the inclusion of a “Getting Talent Back to Work Toolkit” developed by SHRM.
The toolkit is designed to help businesses “apply evidence-based best practices” for hiring talent with a criminal background. The kit also includes assistance to understand legal factors involved with each candidate and includes practical guidance on how to recruit talent that falls into this category.
It’s important to remember that not every person or case is the same. Each qualified individual should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. This will help you make informed hiring decisions when seeking qualified talent to fill your roles. You might just find the exact candidate to fill a critical need that will help your company grow.
