5 Steps to Finding a Job You Love
June 2, 2020 | Career Blog
It’s true, most people look forward to their days off. Appreciating time off doesn’t mean anything is wrong with where you work. However, if you find that you are dreading going back when the weekend is over, that’s another story.
Going into your job should not be eating you up inside. This is how you spend the majority of your days. We only have so much time on this earth! Don’t waste it watching the clock, waiting until your workday is over. If you have realized that that is you, it’s ok.
Your Job Can Be Your Bliss
Making a change can be daunting, but trust us, you are going to feel so much better once you do. We’re here to help. First, let’s start by going over five steps to finding a job you love.
1. Do Some Reflecting
If you’re going to find a job that truly makes you happy, you need to be honest with yourself. Some ways to reflect and dig deep are:
- Think back to the things you loved before you needed to work for a living.
- Make a list of the ways you like to spend your time.
- Journal.
- Talk to your friends and family about it.
- Make a list of the things you dislike about your current job.
- Make a list of your skills.
- Think about the careers that others have that you admire, and ask yourself why that is.
2. Learn From Your Mistakes
Why do you think you’re unhappy? Is it all because you’re in a job you don’t like? And how did you get there? At some point, you had to think that taking that job was the right move for you. When we end up in a bad situation, it can be tempting to put the blame on factors outside of yourself. But the only way you are going to end up somewhere better is if you are honest about how you got here.
Another way to find out where things went wrong is by asking others. Maybe you applied for a job that you really wanted and didn’t get it. Reach out to that interviewer and ask what you could have done differently. What can it hurt? If you are going to do it right this time, make sure you know every way you can improve to get yourself there.
3. Do Some Research
Have you ever taken one of those quizzes that tell you what jobs you would be best at? Don’t just shrug those off! The really good ones ask questions about your passions and skills that then match you up with careers you might not have even considered. They help you to see what you’re capable of and to think outside the box a little.
Also, do some web surfing. The internet is your friend. Look into what kind of credentials you need to land your dream job. See what opportunities are out there for a person with the background that you have. You might be surprised by what you discover.
4. Find a Mentor
Maybe you already have someone you go to for advice. Whether you do or if you are in need of one, that person should be someone you see as:
- Put together.
- Happy.
- Mature.
- Independent.
- Honest with themselves and others.
- Hard-working.
- Dependable.
Talking to someone who possesses all of these qualities can help you take a look at your own life and figure out what change you need to make. It’s also inspiring to see how they got where they are now. Hearing about their journey may shine some light on where you are in yours and how to move forward.
5. Don’t Be Afraid of Asking for Help
Many people end up in jobs they love because people they know helped them get there. There is no shame in that. Companies like hiring people when they are referred to them by someone they already know and trust. So ask around! See if any of your friends or family members know of jobs that are hiring. Remember not to settle though. Only apply to that job if it’s something you really think you will like.
Friends and family aren’t the only people that can help. You can also turn to a staffing agency. Doing so won’t cost you anything, and they will help you find a job that’s a good fit for you. Why do they provide this service for free? Well, technically they don’t. The companies pay them to find people who would be great additions to their teams. So staffing agencies are always looking for people like you!
